University of Makeni UNIMAK Library – see details below:

The University Library

When the University of Makeni (UNIMAK) started as an institute, The Fatima Institute (TFI), in 2005, it had a small building as its library. In August 2009, TFI was accredited university status by the Tertiary Education Commission (TEC) of Sierra Leone.

Before the end of 2009, a whole building was built to serve as the library of the university. In early 2010, the current library was set up with new shelves, consignments of text books, journals, magazines, novels, encyclopedia, etc. and was officially opened. This current library makes provision for offices for the chief librarian and other library staff, and also a room furnished with computers that are connected to the internet for students to do research.

The current library is opened for use from Monday to Saturday from 09:00 am to 09:00 pm. During its opening hours, all registered students of the university can pick up books, journals, magazines, etc from the shelves, use the reading space provided and return the items to shelf after use. Students who wish to take a book, magazine, journal, etc outside the library building must discuss that with the chief librarian. It is only with the approval of the chief librarian that a student can take a book, journal, magazine, etc outside the library building.

Historical Background of University of Makeni UNIMAK

Historical Background of University of Makeni UNIMAK – see details below:

The University of Makeni (UNIMAK) is a private university in the Northern Province of Sierra Leone that was fully accredited in 2009.

UNIMAK places “social development” at the heart of everything it does. For this reason UNIMAK has made great efforts to develop academic programmes that are rooted in the everyday reality of contemporary Africa. Currently there are approximately 1500 students, 147 full time lecturers, 30 part time and 31 visiting professors who make up the UNIMAK family.

The dynamism and idealism that motivated the development of UNIMAK in the past decade can be summed up in the following statements:

Vision

We aspire to be a world class university with excellence in education, research and public engagement where sustainable peace and social justice transcend boundaries.

Mission

Informed by Catholic social teaching, to promote sustainable human, social, political and economic development in Sierra Leone and Africa as a whole, which at the same time respects the environment so that its resources are used for the benefit of all.

 Aims and Objectives

The University seeks through the provision of quality higher education to:

1. Develop, promote and implement a common ethical vision and praxis for all dimensions of development in Africa in support of the Sustainable Development Goals.

2. Foster professionalism within civil society, politics, business and religion and build, through sensitization, a better society.

3. Strengthen the role of the Church, especially in her social mission to build equity, justice, peace and democracy.

Building a Civilization of Love.
